TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – The fifth and final day for Golden Apple awards and the News 10 crew didn’t have to go far to present this award. They headed over to Dixie Bee Elementary to present Emily Gettinger Condon with her 2016 Golden Apple.

Emily teaches kindergarten and she says she comes from a long line of teachers.

“My dad teaches, my mom was one class short of becoming a teacher and she raised six kids, and all of us where teachers,” she said. “I’ve got five brothers and sisters and we are all involved in teaching in one way or another.”

“She really is just really kid oriented and really gives the kids a voice in the classroom, they have individual goals and she is really a hands on minds on teacher,” former Golden Apple winner, Tim Moss, said. “And the kids are inquiring and asking questions and learning from each other and it’s just an exciting place to be.”

“I really want to have kids that can make their own decisions, decide ‘hey I’m going to finish this book by Friday – what do I need to do to be able to get there?’ And we do a lot of talking about how to set a goal and how to meet that goal,” Emily continued. “So I would say that even in kindergarten I knew exactly where I was going and what I wanted to do.”

Other describe Emily as a natural at what she does. They say she is able to create an environment for the kids to come in to each day to learn and grow and take care of each other.
