VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) – For day two honoring our 2016 Golden Apple recipients, News 10 headed to Vincennes to give the award to Haley Lancaster an English teach at Vincennes Lincoln High School.
“It was around my junior year of high school when I really started thinking seriously about teaching,” Haley told News 10. “As much as I begged my parents they would not pay for a theater degree. My mom wanted me to be a lawyer because I could argue all the time.”
“Her ability to differentiate for her students’ needs and individualize her education is what makes her a great teacher,” explained Principal Steve Combs.
Haley says that she wasn’t a great student when she was in high school and she even tells her students that it was completely her fault that she wasn’t. She says that it was her teachers who pushed her and told her that she could do it.
“Probably one of the best reasons to be a teacher is to know that you are making a difference, and after 10 years I see some of the successes some of my former students have, I know I helped,” she said. “In some way, in some small way I helped, and that is what keeps me going.”
