Making A Difference one life at a time

VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) – Danny Pierson has been helping change the lives of kids in Vincennes for more than 10 years.

Through his work at Higher Bound House, he’s been able to steer them down the right path.

“It was basically born out of a need for a safe place for kids to come to after school, and we’ve developed into so much more,” Danny said.

Higher Bound House is a place for kids to go to do homework, get a bible lesson, get a warm meal and just have a safe haven.

Danny says without this place, many of these kids’ lives wouldn’t be the same.

“A lot of these kids who come here, that are even here today, they would be roaming the streets of the neighborhoods doing something that probably wouldn’t be healthy for them,” Danny said.

And while the kids laugh and play, there are some people here like Derek Brown who know what this place can do.

That’s because he came here as a kid himself.

“I’ve been moving up through the ministry, and this is where it lead me to,” Derek said. “It’s lead me back to a place that helped me when I was struggling. And I kind of want to give back to Danny by helping him with the kids he’s got now that are struggling.”

Each child’s background is different – from things like drugs, divorce or even death. Derek hopes to show these kids what Danny has done for him, can be done for them.

“The year, year and a half I went he seen me go through some hard times and he was there for me no matter what,” Derek said. “He’s helped me out a lot. And I can appreciate because I’ve been in these kids’ shoes. I can appreciate somebody like Danny for doing what he’s doing because these kids need somebody they know’s going to be there for them no matter what.”

And that’s exactly Danny’s hope, to be there no matter what and as long as possible. To make sure the kids of Vincennes know they always have a safe place to go and knowing that he’s helped make a difference.

“I don’t have dreams of having a big salary, or the right retirement plan, or a golden parachute package of retirement,” Danny said. “I just have dreams of impacting these kids’ lives.”

So that maybe one day, these kids can grow up to accomplish their dreams.

Danny says they don’t have hundreds of kids coming through their doors. But they have the kids who are important and who need a safe place to go.

And one thing they’re trying to purchase is a van to transport kids.
