TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – A judge could decide whether a proposed power line will be built as designed.
Duke Energy says it needs to build a new transmission line from the Dresser Substation to the Terre Haute power plant. New federal environmental rules will force Duke Energy to shut down four of its power-generating units at the power plant.
Duke Energy stated the new line will ensure reliable power for all customers in the area. The company proposes building the line in an easement Duke Energy says it already owns.
“We have always retained the easement. For instance, through the years, we continue to pay taxes on the easement,” Angeline Protogere from Duke Energy told us.
Duke claims it has recorded easement rights along the route since the 1950’s.
The company removed an overhead power line in the mid 1990’s, but retained easement rights for future use.
